The Solo Club: Bring Me and the Wookiee

Don’t let the name, or the fact that my boyfriend broke up with me the day before, trick you- The Solo Club is the perfect spot to relax and kick back with a few drinks and friends. The vibe is so lo key, you order at the bar and seat yourself, which I appreciate on a Sunday when the brunch lines in Portland make me want to go back to bed. The wait is not long and there are many different areas, each with their own vibes, to post up.

The menu has a variety of flavors and textures, and the restaurant partners with local businesses in Portland to source their menu items. They serve Water Avenue Coffee, and there is no set coffee menu, but you can just order whatever your favorite espresso drink is and the bartender will make it for you. I got a cortado of course.

Full disclosure, I liked it so much I went back to try it at a non-brunch time to see if it was still as good… it was! The wait was still non-existent and we walked right up to the bar and ordered. If you are like me and want to eat your feelings when you’re emotional, you could get a cocktail and cake. We ordered the gooey butter cake and it was so good I almost forgot I had gotten dumped. The texture is so dense and creamy, like the uncooked center of a sugar cookie, but cooked and way better. Plus cardamom and pistachio added the perfect amount of spice and salt to the sweet mix.

Can’t wait to go back and try some more of the signature cocktails and obviously stare at the ridiculously perfect interior design featuring natural stone, a rattan motorcycle, painted metals, and my favorite design trend of all time: patterned tile floors!
